Alright guys. Today we’re talking simplicity in our wardrobes.
Capsule wardrobes, for those who may be new to them, are all about keeping things simple. The basic principles are: only have things in your closet that you love, that fit you NOW, and that can generally be paired with anything else in your closet.
You’ll notice that capsules typically consist of lots of basic neutrals with just pops of patterns & colors sprinkled in here and there. This allows you to mix & match virtually your whole closet without having to spend too much money! It also makes getting dressed in the morning WAY easier! Gone are the days of standing in your closet staring for 20 minutes before you just start trying on absolutely anything that will fit! If you’ve kept up with your capsule, everything fits!
Now even though the idea of a capsule is to keep it simple , every once in a while, it may be helpful to do a little refresh that brings us back into the appropriate style decade (although, if you held on to things long enough, some of your wardrobe choices from the early 90s may very well be back in style right now, lol). The goal of a style refresh is to just add a few key pieces that will update your look but still allow you to continue wearing most of what you already have in your closet.
So, to help you guys visualize what I mean, I put this little style session together for y’all. This fall I shopped around to see what looks were “trending”, what out of those looks I actually liked, what was “me”, and what would easily fit into my existing capsule. This is what I came up with!

By incorporating one or two additional pieces from my closet, I was able to create 7 more looks that spun off the first original outfit.
Some of the pieces you see here are brand new (they’re the items I bought as part of my fall refresh), and some I’ve had for a while. I wanted to show you guys here that even with one basic outfit, you can create so many different looks! You can layer it, add color, change a sweater or a jacket, wear it with different shoes, make subtle changes that not only change the look, but allow you to get the most out of your wardrobe (and your wallet)! It’s about being smart with your choices when you’re shopping.
Tip: When you are out shopping, before you buy something, think to yourself, “Can I wear this with at least 5 other things I already own in my closet?” It’s a good way to just make sure that you’re staying true to your capsule’s “theme”, if you will.
I really like the way my capsule came together for fall!! The colors I added in are “in style” & trending, but I of course made a point to stay true to myself & my style! ☺️ The outfits above have been some of my go-to’s this season! I’m loving the chunky sweater look; especially when you can incorporate a fun plaid in there! In Chicago, layers are a must so I nearly always have a cardigan handy too! Again, the point is to you use items you already own to put together some different looks. But, if for some reason you don’t own some of these staples, or you’re still working on putting together a capsule for the first time, just make sure you’re thinking ahead as you buy. Get a visual, (kinda like the series I put together above) to help you decided which pieces will make the biggest impact & give you the biggest return. Can you see several different outfits coming together just by adding one piece? Or do you need to add a few of the basic staples to allow you to create the looks? Whatever the answer, just make sure you’re planning things out to help you stay on track!
Well, hopefully y’all found this helpful! Let me know in the comments below if you guys want to see more of these types of posts! What are some tips/tricks you guys use to stay on track with your capsule? I’d love to know!!
